Housewife, 35, gets $200k bail for possession of marijuana

Leona Gomes called “Alliah”, a 35-year-old housewife of Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo was granted $200,000 bail for the offence of possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking.

Gomes made her appearance at the Bartica Magistrate’s Court on Thursday before Magistrate Crystal Lambert.

She pleaded not guilty when the charge was read to her.

The matter was adjourned until October 28, 2022 for filing of statements.

The woman was arrested on Wednesday with 438 grams of marijuana at the Bartica stelling.

Police Headquarters had reported that information was received that the woman was also suspected of trafficking a 14-year-old girl.

At about 13:30hrs, the woman and the child were contacted when they disembarked a speedboat at the Bartica stelling.

The 14-year-old girl said she was told by the woman that she was being taken to Blue Mountain Backdam to work at a shop to sell alcoholic beverages.
