Woman who fed 4-year-old daughter poison remanded to prison

The 23-year-old woman who force fed her 4-year-old daughter a poisonous substance was earlier today remanded to prison at the No.51 Magistrate Court by Magistrate Alex Moore.

Niladave Shamsundar called “Tasha”, a housewife of lot 1 No. 50 Village Corentyne, Berbice, was charged with the attempted murder of her daughter.

The charge was laid under section section 103 (a) of the Criminal law (Offences) Act, Chapter 8:01.

The incident occured on October 2 2022 at No.50 Village, Corentyne, Berbice. The woman is set to return to court on December 9 2022.

According to the facts of the case, on October 2 2022, the accused and her husband had an argument and her husband dealt her a slap.

The accused then threatened to kill herself and her two daughters.

The accused was in the house with the victim while the husband was in hammock on the veranda when she made the threats. It was shortly after, the father heard the screams of his daughter and he ran to her assistance.

He saw his wife with the bottle of contained Gramaxone that collected from his mother’s house at No.70 Village, Upper Corentyne.

The man then grabbed the bottle from his wife’s hand and threw it away. He then rushed the child to the Port Mourant Hospital where she was subsequently transferred to the New Amsterdam Hospital in a critical condition.

The accused had initially told police that the child took the poison from the goat pen and drank it. She later confessed that she lied and that was not what had happened.

    Let justice be served. II van praying for the safe recovery of that 4 year old child. That is an incident she would never, ever forget despite her youthful age. She should be given counselling. There is no doubt that she would be traumatized for a long time.
