A 56-year-old labourer is hospitalised in a critical condition after he was chopped about his body during an argument with a cane harvester on Friday.

Injured is Lawrence Rodrigues of Rose Hall Town, East Berbice Corentyne.

The News Room understands that Rodrigues was attacked with a cutlass after he reportedly removed a bicycle from the suspect’s premises.

The entire incident was caught on video by neighbours and it showed the victim on the ground yelling in pain while using the bicycle to protect himself from the multiple chops by the suspect.

Rodrigues was subsequently rushed to the Port Mourant Public Hospital where he was later transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital and admitted.

The suspect is in police custody assisting with the investigations.

Meanwhile, a resident of the area revealed that the bicycle belongs to the victim and that he had lent the suspect it along with a pressure pot. The victim was reportedly collecting back his property but the suspect was refusing to hand it over.

This is what resulted in the argument and subsequent chopping.

It is amazing how some people borrow items from others and feel that those items are good enough for them to keep and not to return. Mr. Rodrigues acted in good faith like a good Samarathon and has ended up almost losing his life. The person who borrowed those items had no intention of returning them from the inception. and preferred to commit murder instead.

No, no, no! That isn’t what resulted in the argument and subsequent chopping. What caused these things is complete lack of confidence that the people have in the police force to come and help them with their problems. Decades of no shows by the police when called have left citizens no choice but to confront each other. In a country that is truly in 2022 one phone call to the police by the victim would have seen the police coming and helping him get back his things without him getting into confrontation with the other person. But because this is Guyana, a land with severe deformities, people know that police won’t come to help them. So now the people are left to confront each other and this is the result. So, reporter, now you know the real story. You’re welcome.
But not to worry. We will do some more wining down and blackguardness and everything will be ok.

Likely the victim called police already to help him get his stuff back but there was no help from them leaving the victim no choice but confrontation with the eventual attacker. Failed by Guyana. Well what’s new. Guyana has been failing people for decades and decades.
