Farmer arrested with illegal gun, 35 grams of ganja

A 28-year-old farmer of Angoy’s Avenue, New Amsterdam, Berbice was arrested on Saturday last with a .22 handgun and 35 grams of marijuana.

Police Headquarters reported that the man was in a wooden boat in the Upper Berbice River and jumped out when he saw the police ranks.

“The ranks gave chase and managed to apprehend him a short distance away. A search conducted on his person revealed a transparent plastic bag containing a quantity of leaves, seeds and stems suspected to be cannabis in a haversack the man was wearing,” the police reported.

A further search unearthed the handgun in the man’s pants waist.

When told of the offence the suspect reportedly said: “Officer hear wam, this is me boss man thing”.

He was subsequently arrested and escorted to Kwakwani Police Station along with the suspected narcotics and firearm.

The suspect remains in custody pending charges.
