A 21-year-old fisherman of Squatting Area, Vergenoegen, East Bank Essequibo was on Tuesday remanded to prison after he was charged with the murder of his brother, Dave Cook, 20, also a fisherman.

Sunil Cook, aka ‘Tall Man’, appeared before Magistrate Zamilla Alli-Seepaul at the Leonora Magistrate’s Court where he was charged with fatally stabbing his brother.

The man who was represented by attorney Ganesh Hira was not required to enter a plea to the indictable charge.

Sunil was remanded to prison and the case was adjourned to December 01.

The police reported that according to a housewife living in the area, she was with the two brothers on the Seawall at Vergenoegen on October 14 at approximately 22:50 hrs when Dave allegedly told Sunil that he saw his girlfriend with another man at Parika.

This annoyed Sunil and an argument ensued between the brothers. The woman further mentioned that she saw the Sunil take a swing at the his brother’s lower abdomen, which caused him to fall to the ground. It was then that she observed Sunil was holding a knife in his hand.

She then observed Dave was bleeding profusely from his lower abdomen. Sunil then fled the area, and an alarm was raised and the police were summoned.

Dave was escorted to Leonora Cottage Hospital, where he was seen and examined by a doctor. He later succumbed on Saturday, October 15, 2022, at about 01:48 hrs, while receiving treatment at West Demerara Regional Hospital.
