Man found guilty of repeatedly raping girl, 9

A 39-year-old man was on Tuesday found guilty of three counts of rape committed on a 9-year-old girl in 2018.

Mario Heywood of East Ruimveldt, Georgetown was on trial before Justice Sandil Kissoon at the Demerara High Court.

He had pleaded not guilty to the three charges of rape committed between October 1, 2018, and November 20, 2018.

It is alleged that the child was left in his care when he took advantage of her and committed the rape. Heywood threatened the child that he would kill her mother if she told anyone of the assault.

A 12-member jury, after deliberating for over two hours, found Heywood guilty of the indictments.

He was remanded to prison until he is sentenced on November 22.

The state was represented by State Counsel Cicelia Corbin, Caressa Henry and Marisa Edwards.

    What a heinous crime for one to deflower
    an innocent child changing the course of her young life I do hope that proper justice would be served in this case which will serve as a deterant to those on the outside.
