Alleged rape at Hugo Chavez Centre to be thoroughly investigated

The Ministry of Human Services and Social Security is investigating allegations of rape committed on a female resident of the Hugo Chavez Rehab Centre at Onverwagt, West Coast Berbice.
Regional Commander, Senior Superintendent Kurleigh Simon told the News Room that the incident reportedly occurred on October 23 and was reported to the police some four days later.
“It was reported to someone at the Centre and only came to the police station three or four days later,” Commander Simon said.
He explained that the alleged perpetrator, a male patient at the same institution, is yet to be arrested.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security in a statement pledged to leave “no stone unturned in this matter.”
“Acts of this nature are unacceptable and go against everything the Ministry tries to curb,” the ministry said in a statement.
The Hugo Chavez Centre is currently housing patients with mental health issues and those facing drug addiction.
