Guyana Harpy Eagles suffered a 28-run loss to Windward Islands Volcanoes in their opening Group A game of the CG United Super50 Cup on Monday at Queen’s Park Oval in Trinidad.
Chasing 297, the Leon Johnson-led Harpy Eagles were heading to a heavier defeat at 220-9, before last pair Veerasammy Permaul and Gudakesh Motie put together 48 for the final wicket to reduce the margin.
Motie made 31 not out and Permaul 28.
West Indies Test selectee Tagenarine Chanderpaul topcored with 48, Tevin Imlach made 36, Kevin Sinclair 33 and Sherfane Rutherford 28.
Johnson fell for 22, Shimron Hetmyer 12, Anthony Bramble 18, Romario Shepherd one and Clinton Pestano five.
Bowling for Volcanoes, Shadrack Descarte took 3-41.
Earlier, former West Indies Under-19 batsman Alick Athanaze scored a magnificent 133, an innings that included 12 fours and four sixes, to power Volcanoes to a commanding 296-4 after they were sent in to bat.
The left-handed Athanaze added 119 for the first wicket with Johnson Charles, who made 64, and 127 for the second wicket with Kavem Hodge, who scored a brisk 42.
Bowling for Harpy Eagles, Motie took 2-57, Pestano 1-45 and Permaul 1-57.
Harpy Eagles are up against Trinidad and Tobago Red Force on Wednesday, a day/night game at the Brian Lara Cricket Academy in Tarouba.
