10 years jail for man who attempted to murder his ex-girlfriend
A 41-year-old farmer was on Thursday sentenced to 10 years in jail for a gruesome chopping attack on his ex-lover in 2019.
Fazil Osman, formerly of Mahaica, East Coast Demerara (ECD), was jailed by Justice Jo-Ann Barlow at the Demerara High Court.
On September 30, Osman admitted to attempting to murder the 22-year-old woman on February 24, 2019.
Osman was represented by defence attorney Teriq Mohammed, while the State was represented by prosecutor Latifah Elliot.
A probation report, which was presented said that Osman was abusive towards his family, especially the victim.
The victim, who read her impact statement in court said, “ I finally get justice.”
Prosecutor Elliot asked the court to consider the injury the victim sustained along with the nature, gravity and prevalence of the offence. She also said that the attack was planned and unprovoked.
The Judge, after considering the nature of the case, said that she found no mitigating factors in favour of Osman. However, she gave him credit for his early guilty plea.
In the end, Justice Barlow sentenced Osman to 10 years imprisonment and ordered that the prison authorities deduct time spent on remand from the sentence.
According to reports, Osman and the victim shared a relationship but he was abusive towards her.
On the day in question, the victim was accompanied by a Rural Constable to Osman’s home to serve him with a restraining order.
Osman whipped out his cutlass and dealt the woman several chops to her face, hand, back and about the body.
The matter was reported to the police and Osman was later arrested.
