Fight over ‘bush weed’ ends in murder

A fight between two men over the type of ganja one of them was smoking ended in murder early on Tuesday.
Police said 32-year-old Sherwayne Underwood of La Parfaite Harmonie, West Bank Demerara was killed around 03:00 hrs by a man he was drinking with.

Underwood and the 29-year-old suspect were drinking at Policeman Corner, La Parfaite Harmonie during the night.

“Reports indicate that the men were at Policeman Corner imbibing when they had a misunderstanding over marijuana that the now deceased man was using because the suspect said it was ‘bush weed’.

“As a result, the suspect dealt the now deceased man a punch to the side of his head and a fight ensued.
“During the fight, the suspect whipped out a knife and dealt 32-year-old Underwood a single stab to his abdomen,” Police headquarters stated.

After being stabbed, Underwood ran a short distance away before he collapsed.

He was picked up in a conscious state by public-spirited persons and rushed to the West Demerara Regional Hospital where he later succumbed to his injury.

The suspect, who made good his escape from the scene, was later arrested at about 06:20 hours Tuesday morning.

The suspect was arrested and taken to Parfaite Harmonie Police Station, where he gave a video-recorded statement under caution, admitting to the crime.

Underwood’s body is presently at the Ezekiel Funeral Home awaiting a post mortem examination as investigations are ongoing.
