Pedro’s double hands Western Tigers GFA League title

It was billed as a match that would have been fought tooth and nail to crown the 2022 senior champions of the Georgetown Football Association (GFA), but that was not the case as the experience of the West Ruimveldt based Western Tigers team outdid the youthful exuberance of the Georgetown Football Club on Sunday last at the GFC ground, Bourda.

The match ended 2-1 in favour of the Tigers with both goals scored by the ever-dependable Hubert Pedro, who struck in each half.

Even a last gasp effort by the home team, which scored in the 70^th minute through Daniel Ross’ goal, could not deny Western Tigers from romping to championship glory after many years.

It was a welcome return to the pinnacle of the sport in the capital city for the West lads and will no doubt lift their confidence ahead of the 2022/2023 GFF season.

For much of the game, Western Tigers controlled and dictated the flow of the exchanges, even as the GFC lads countered with runs of their own and showed that they will be a force to reckon with in the new season.

The third-place match saw the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) defeating Santos 4-2 to emerge winners, thanks to a hat-trick from forward Benjamin Opara in the 12^th, 41^st and 55^th minutes.

The other goal was scored by fellow forward, Sherwin Ceasar in the 87^th minute.

Santos’ goals were scored by Darron Niles in the 21^st minute and Orin Yard in the 78^th.
