Mark Fontanelle, 22, was Wednesday sentenced to serve 11 years in jail after he confessed to raping a 12-year-old girl in 2021.

Fontanelle of First Phase, Kwakwani, Upper Berbice River, was sentenced by Justice Sandil Kissoon at the Demerara High Court.

Last month, Fontanelle confessed to raping the girl on November 17, 2021.

Justice Kissoon, while delivering his sentencing remarks, said that he considered the psychological trauma the incident caused the victim.

The Judge highlighted that the victim was forced and violently raped by Fontanelle on the day in question.
The Judge also considered that Fontanelle breached the victim’s trust.

However, the Judge said that Fontanelle took responsibility for his actions at the first available opportunity.
Fontanelle was represented by Teriq Mohammed. The State was represented by prosecutors Cicelia Corbin, Caressa Henry, and Paneeta Persaud.
