Man, 29, dies after electrocuted while mounting Christmas tree

Deepak Patel Ramdeen, a 29-year-old machinist, died after he and four others were electrocuted while mounting a Christmas tree at a Lusignan, East Coast Demerara (ECD) workshop on Friday night.

The News Room understands that the five individuals were mounting the tree on Friday. The tree, however, made contact with nearby electrical lines.

On Saturday afternoon, Police Headquarters reported that Ramdeen, along with Gupta Ramcharran, called ‘Billy’, a 45-year-old Fitter Machinist of Lot 139 East Lusignan; Mahendra Ramcharran, a 41-year-old businessman of Good Hope; and Shivraj Rulall, a 20-year-old of Mon Repos were in the process of erecting the metal tree outside Gupta Ramcharran’s home.

At 23:00 hrs, the deceased (Ramdeen) and others were all erecting the metal Christmas tree using a crane attached to a lorry bearing registration #GCA 9708 that Darampaul Prettipaul was operating.
It is alleged that the star on the tip of the tree came into contact with a live wire overhead which caused Ramdeen and the others to be electrocuted. Ramdeen died while receiving medical treatment.

Two of the four remaining individuals are receiving critical care at the Georgetown Public Hospital, while the other two sustained minor injuries are being treated for same.

Investigations are ongoing.
