Suspect in murder of Princes Street pensioner arrested

The relative who was suspected of committing the murder of Audrey Harris-Hayde, 76, on Friday was arrested by public spirited persons while at Leopold Street, Werk-en-rust, Georgetown on the same day.

Police Commander of Regional Division ‘A’, Simon McBean, confirmed that the man was arrested on Friday. The 50-year-old man, who Police said is mentally ill, was arrested by public spirited citizens who then handed him over to the police.

A release by the GPF on Friday stated that the murder occurred at about O9:00hrs on Friday at the woman’s Lot 11 Princess Street, Georgetown, home. The woman’s husband, Lawrence Hayde, said the woman and her relative had an altercation on Friday. Only the pair was home when the incident occurred.

According to information given to the Police, the neighbours heard the woman screaming and alerted her relatives who asked that the neighbour investigate the situation. Another relative who soon arrived at the residence observed that Harris-Hayde was lying motionless on the ground in her yard.

The Police report states that the man, who was armed with a knife, dealt the victim two stabs on both sides of her neck. At the time also, the victim was armed with a hammer. The hammer was found under her body. Harris-Hyde after being stabbed, then fell to the ground helplessly, and the suspect escaped.

The victim was taken to Georgetown Public Hospital, where she was pronounced dead on arrival by Doctor Singh. The body was then taken to the Memorial Garden Funeral Parlour, awaiting a post-mortem examination.
