The government has agreed to develop a new national ID card that will allow for ease of business and travel through the country’s airports, Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo announced on Friday afternoon.

He said the ID card, which will carry a secure chip with data such as blood type, tax ID number, driver’s license, is being developed with funding from the Abu Dhabi Fund for Development – a foreign aid agency established by the government of Abu Dhabi.

Dr Jagdeo announced that legislation will need to be passed for the use of the card.

He said the government envisages that the card can be used with ease at banks and other institutions.

He further said the idea also is for nationals to use the card when arriving at the airports without the hassles of going through the cumbersome paper system at the airport.

The Vice President announced that the government is working with Abu Dhabi Exports to set up e-portals at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport to eventually take the airport paperless.
