Ganesh Choonilall, 25, of Airy Hall, Region Two was Friday sentenced to two years imprisonment for causing the death of Ameer Ali, a vendor of Adventure, Essequibo Coast.

He was also fined $20,000 for failing to render assistance soon after the accident on September 19, 2022 along the Adventure public road.

Choonilall made his appearance virtually before Magistrate Esther Sam who rejected his no-case submission.

Choonilall was charged with causing death by dangerous driving, failing to stop after an accident and failing to render assistance to an injured person.

Magistrate Sam found the accused guilty of all three charges.

The 63-year-old vegetable vendor, popularly known as ‘Greens Boy’, was struck down on September 19 at about 18:20 hours.

Ali was walking along the roadway when the hire car – HD 2994 – driven by Choonilall, came into his pathway.

Choonilall was reportedly speeding and was also intoxicated. He struck the elderly pedestrian and immediately fled the scene.

The autopsy revealed that Ali died from multiple injuries.

Two years only!! Nothing for the drunk driving also? This is a joke. A man is dead and his family’s life is upturned.
