After a meeting with President Irfaan Ali on Sunday night, Demerara speedboat operators have agreed to resume work on Monday without an increase in fares.

The speedboat operators who ply the Vreed-en-hoop to Georgetown route took strike action on Friday, calling for an increase in fare, leaving thousands of passengers stranded and causing major traffic congestion on the western end of the Demerara Harbour Bridge.

The President met with the operators at the Leonora Track and Field Centre, West Coast Demerara.

The President committed to helping improve the service of the speedboat operators and the landing area, while continuously aiding their growth.

Lallbachan Babulal, Vice President of the Demerara River Speed Boat Association expressed satisfaction with the meeting and said members are looking forward to working with the President to improve the service.
