Two men eluded arrest on Friday but ranks of the Customs Anti Narcotic Unit (CANU) were able to seize a large quantity of marijuana, a shotgun and matching cartridges during an operation in the Skeldon Estate backlands, Corentyne Berbice.

A statement from CANU related that its ranks noticed two men fleeing from a speed boat to a neighbouring cane field during the operation.

They abandoned the boat and a subsequent search led to the discovery of five parcels containing a quantity of suspected cannabis, as well as a single-barrel 12-gauge shotgun and 12 live matching cartridges.

The ranks made checks around the area in attempts to identify and apprehend the individuals but came up empty-handed.

The suspected narcotics and shotgun were taken to CANU’s Skeldon Office where the suspected narcotics tested positive for cannabis, weighing a total of 57.2 kg, with a street value of approximately $7 million.

Investigations are ongoing
