One Guyana President’s Cup: Regions Three and Four into final after commanding wins

Region Three and Region Four will contest the final of the inaugural One Guyana President’s Cup Football tournament following commanding wins on the penultimate night of competition on Wednesday at the National Track and Field Centre, Leonora, West Coast Demerara.

In two high-scoring semi-finals, tournament favourites Region Four demolished Region Five 8-1, before Region Three came back from a goal down to prevail 5-2 over Region Seven.

In the opening encounter, the Region Four lads continue their goal-scoring spree, breaching the defence of Region Five almost at will.

Nicholas McArthur (17^th and 30^th) and Omari Glasgow (51^st and 55^th) netted a double apiece, while Jeremy Garrett (42^nd), Kelsey Benjamin (45^th), Daniel Wilson (53^rd) and Samuel Garnett (71^st) added a goal each.

Region Five’s lone goal came off the cleats of Abumchi Benjamin in the 85^th minute.

In semi-final two, Region Seven took an early lead when Whitney Welcome netted in the third minute of play, however, Region Three would take a 2-1 lead by half-time with Delon Lanferman (24^th) and Trayon Bobb (31^st) on target.

Upon resumption, Lanferman scored his second goal in the 55^th minute to give Region Three a 3-1 advantage, before Andrew Simmons pulled one back for Region Seven in the 69^th minute to make it 3-2.

Jamal Perreira (72^nd) and Colwyn Adams (81^st) then put the game beyond Region Seven to give Region Three a place in the final on January 1, 2023.

The overall winner is guaranteed $2 million, while the losing finalist will pocket half that amount.

The tournament, the brainchild of President Irfaan Ali, is being coordinated by the Guyana Football Federation and the Kashif and Shanghai Organisation with support from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport.
