6-month-old girl dies after sleeping driver loses control of vehicle

A six-month-old baby girl, Devine Khan, died Monday morning in an accident at Unity, East Coast Demerara (ECD).

A statement from Police Headquarters noted that at about 01:30hrs Davin Butts, a 31-year-old of Mahaicony, ECD collided with a vehicle driven by Ackeem Jerrick of Sparendaam Housing Scheme, ECD.

The baby girl was in Jerrick’s vehicle along with 27-year-old Dequan Khan of West Road Sparendaam.

Police said Jerrick was proceeding west along the southern drive lane of Unity Public Road and Butts was proceeding east along the northern drive lane.

Butts claimed that he fell asleep and lost control of his car.

As a result, he collided with the front portion Jerrick’s car. Both drivers and occupants were taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where six-month-old Devine Khan was pronounced dead on arrival.

Butts received injuries to his head while Jerricks received injuries to his right leg, and Dequan Khan received injuries about his body.

They are presently being treated at the same hospital.

Both vehicles were lodged to be examined as investigations continue.

    Gone too soon. How sad it is to know that an infant had to lose his life at such a tender age all because of a careless driver. I do hope that justice would be served. May his soul rest in peace and rise in glory My condolence goes out to his sorrowing parents and other relatives.
