Volda Lawrence, Carol Joseph and Dr. Karen Cummings, all key opposition figures implicated in efforts to rig the March 2, 2020 General and Regional Elections, invoked their right to remain silent during the ongoing elections inquiry on Thursday.
The women were served notices compelling them to appear before the Commission of Inquiry.
They complied with those notices and appeared before the Commission chaired by Justice of the Appeal (retired) of Turks and Caicos Stanley John. But none of them testified.
“I reserve my right to remain silent,” a smiling Lawrence told the Commission when she took the stand on Thursday.
Joseph and Dr. Cummings expressed similar sentiments.
This right to remain silent was reinforced by Justice John, who addressed each of the women as they took the stand.
Attorney Nigel Hughes, who is representing Lawrence and Joseph on criminal charges for electoral fraud, explained that the women have a right not to potentially implicate themselves at the inquiry given they are facing those charges.
Lawrence, Joseph and the Returning Officer for District Four Clairmont Mingo are accused of inflating the results of Region Four – Guyana’s largest voting district – to give the A Partnership for National Unity + Alliance For Change (APNU+AFC) Coalition a majority win at the March 2, 2020, polls when in fact, the PPP/C had won by 15,000 more votes.
Based on prior testimony at the CoI, Lawrence has been accused of declaring false results at the Ashmin’s Building in Georgetown; this building was the 2020 elections’ headquarters.
Joseph has been accused of abusing observers and party agents while Cummings, who was the Foreign Affairs Minister at that time, is accused of threatening international and local observers.
They would not be in this position if they would have remained silent during the election riggin’ attempt.
