A seven-year-old boy from Potaro Road, Bartica, Region Seven is in a critical condition at the Georgetown Public Hospital after he was struck down by a female driver on Thursday.

The young lad, identified as Wesley, is a pupil of the Two Miles Primary School.

Regional Commander Dion Moore on Friday told the News Room that the child had just exited a minibus at about 14:30hrs and was crossing the road when he was struck by the car. The 35-year-old driver is in police custody assisting with the investigation.

Hours after the accident, the child was airlifted to Georgetown by the Guyana Defence Force (GDF) Air Corps.

The GDF in a statement said doctors at the Bartica Hospital made a request through the Regional Health system, after which the GDF was contacted and the requisite approval was granted to transport the lad who has suffered substantial injuries and had to be intubated before travel.
