A 75-year-old man from Region Two (Pomeroon- Supenaam) who tested positive for COVID-19 has died, the Ministry of Health reported on Friday.

The man, who was vaccinated with both his first and second doses of COVID-19 vaccines, died on January 3. This takes the total number of deaths in Guyana since March 2020 to 1,290.

The man is the third COVID-related death recorded in 2023. The Ministry, in a press release issued on Tuesday, stated that a 59-year-old man from Region Four died on January 1 and he was recorded as Guyana’s first recorded COVID-19 death for 2023. A 58-year-old man from Region Five (Mahaica- Berbice) died on January 2.

Aside from the deaths, 51 new infections were recorded over a 24-hour period.

Guyana has now recorded a total of 72, 397 cases since March 2020; 70,778 of those infected people recovered.

Now, there are 311 people in home isolation, 17 in institutional isolation and one patient is in the COVID-19 Intensive Care Unit (ICU).
