Five months after Lusignan fatal accident, driver gets $100,000 bail

Wavell Lamatt, 44, of Beterverwagting, East Coast Demerara was on Monday charged with causing death by dangerous driving and granted $100,000 bail.

Five months after he ran over 54-year-old Prahalad Sawh, Lamatt appeared at the Vigilance Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Fabayo Azore.

He was not required to plead to the charge.

Sawh of Lusignan, ECD, died after he was first hit by a motorcycle and then ran over by Lamatt.

The accident occurred on August 15, 2022 on the Lusignan Public Road.

The motorcycle was being driven by 31-year-old Leon Lewis of Annandale, ECD. Lewis was also injured in the accident.

Police had reported that the motorcar and motorcycle were proceeding east along the carriageway when according to Lewis he suddenly saw a shadow while riding behind a minibus.

When the bus passed, he said he saw Sawh in front of him and claimed he was so close that he collided with him.

Meanwhile, Lamatt told police that he was driving behind the motorcycle when he saw someone laying on the road and he swerved to avoid a collision but despite his effort, he ran over the person.
