Myers can challenge testimonies before elections inquiry wraps up in February

Public hearings at the ongoing elections inquiry should conclude by February 10 and lawyers for former Deputy Chief Elections Officer (DCEO) Roxanne Myers will be able cross-examine witnesses before then.

This is according to Justice of the Appeal (retired) of Turks and Caicos Stanley John, who chairs the Presidential Commission of Inquiry (CoI) into the March 02, 2020 General and Regional elections.

Justice John, at the conclusion of Tuesday’s hearings, said that these proceedings will continue on Monday, February 6, 2023. They should then conclude by February 10.

The CoI Chairman communicated this to Senior Counsel Sophia Chote of Trinidad and Tobago, who leads the proceedings, during the live broadcast on Tuesday morning.

And Justice John said, “If Counsel for Ms Myers wishes to cross examine, that too should take place that week.”

The cross examination, he said clearly, should not occur later than February 10.

In November last year, the News Room confirmed that Counsel from the law firm Hughes, Fields & Stoby had written the secretariat of the CoI asking to be added to the proceedings so that persons who named Myers in their testimonies can be cross-examined.

When contacted then, Secretary to the Commission Javed Shadick confirmed that the letter was received and indicated that the secretariat will respond soon.

He clarified that there are no objections to the request.

Many people gave testimony before the CoI, implicating Myers in an apparent breach of standard operating procedures.

Some testified about her attempts to clear the Ashmin’s Building (the elections headquarters) of observers and party agents. She also, allegedly, influenced key election officials and members of the Guyana Police Force.

Myers has not testified before the Commission
