President of the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club (GMR&SC), Mahendra ‘Raj’ Boodhoo, has revealed they will endeavor to construct new pit lanes at the South Dakota Circuit.
It is also part of developing the portfolio of the track to accommodate international series in the future.
“We are working towards a new pit lane as you see have extended the track with the hope to bring new series into Guyana and that means new amenities will have to be in place”, Boodhoo told News Room Sport in a recent interview.
These new pits will likely be in a location to allow more efficient racing when they have packed race programmes.
“We want a smooth flow [of races], so we hope to move it [the pits] to the outer parameters… with the development of the track, most of the corners are very fast corners now, so, it is strategically locating it at the right place.”
The GMR&SC head indicated they have reached out to the FIA to advise where best they can place the new pit lane.
Through a strategic partnership between the Government and the Club, the South Dakota Circuit has undergone a massive transformation as regards the layout of the track in less than five months.
From 0.78 miles in recent years, it has doubled in length to 1.6 miles, including one of the longest straights in the region, at half a mile.
The immediate aim of the club is to have an FIA Grade 3 course and with further investments, an FIA Grade 2, which would make it the premier racing facility in the Caribbean.
The next phase will entail the installation of further safety apparatus and more secure fences, while phase three will be the construction of stands and other amenities.
