A 26-year-old man has died after he was stabbed Tuesday night by his reputed wife during an argument about rent payment.

Dead is Leroy Dey, a labourer of Breda Street, Werk-en-Rust, Georgetown. Police Headquarters reported that 30-year-old Shaneiza Clarke is in custody.

According to the Police report, Dey returned home at about 23:00hrs on Tuesday after he left some four days ago.

The couple had been living together for the past three years and Police said they would argue and fight regularly.

Following the argument about paying the rent on Tuesday, the couple were involved in scuffle during which Clarke was slapped by Dey and received several lashes about her body with a piece of wood.

Police said, in retaliation, Clarke picked up a kitchen knife that was on the ground at the time and stabbed Dey to his left side chest.

He left the house en route to the Stabroek Market area but collapsed on Cross Street, between Hadfield and Leopold Streets.

He was taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital by an ambulance where he underwent emergency surgery but succumbed to his injury at about 09:25hrs on Wednesday.

Clarke later went to Brickdam Police Station to make a report where she was arrested and later escorted to the Georgetown Public Hospital for her injuries.

She was examined and treated by a doctor and is presently in custody pending investigation.
