A 34-year-old labourer from Martin Street, Rose Hall, Corentyne, was struck down Tuesday night by a Cevon’s Waste Management truck driven by a Canefield, East Canje man.
Dead is Victor Alert. The truck driver was reportedly speeding with another truck belonging to the waste disposal company.
Reports are that the accident occurred at approximately 21:10 hrs on Tuesday.
According to the Police, the garbage truck was heading west along the Rose Hall Public Road when the driver claims that Alert ran across the road and into the path of the vehicle.
Alert was picked up by persons and relatives who were nearby and taken to the Port Mourant Hospital where he was pronounced dead.
A cousin of the dead man, Eon Hooper, told reporters that he was standing on the public road when he saw the two trucks “racing down the road with speed.”
Moments later he heard a loud noise and ran towards the scene, there he saw his cousin on the road, bleeding and unconscious.
“I go and ask who is the driver for the truck and the driver identified himself and the next one (other Cevon driver) tell him go in back in the truck,” Hooper said. The Police arrived shortly after.
Meanwhile, the man’s brother, Randolph Alert, said he saw the entire accident and that the driver “mash breaks from till in front of archway and he slide and knock the man till in front Scott School (Rose Hall Town Primary). Is speed he was coming with. I was out here when it happened.”
He is pleading with the Police to conduct a proper investigation and bring justice to his family.
