Contract up for termination as Moleson Creek road works ignored eight months later

Public Works Minister Juan Edghill on Friday ordered the termination of a road contract inked with N&S construction after the company failed to start any work eight months after receiving a $22 million mobilisation advance payment.

Edghill is on a two-day visit to Region Six (East Berbice- Corentyne), inspecting ongoing and completed infrastructure projects.

There, he saw firsthand that N&S Construction has not started works along the El Dorado Road, at Moleson Creek. The company was contracted to construct a road stretching one kilometre.

Because the construction has not started eight months after the advance payment was received, Edghill said the contract will be terminated.

“We are not going to be in a mode of any contractor doing a work when he feels to do it,” Edghill said in a video broadcast live on his ministry’s Facebook page.

He also explained that even if the contractor is working on another project, they should have additional resources (equipment, personnel and resources) to execute separate projects.

Further, he said that he asked to meet representatives of the N&S Construction company but those representatives did not show up.

Meanwhile, Edghill also inspected the 58 Farm to Market Access Road, where there have been numerous reports of the road corners slipping. That slippage has been attributed to drainage works done at the parallel canal.

“It is clear when you come here… it is a slippage that has to do with the drainage and the work that was recently done in the area,” Edghill lamented.

He, however, promised that interventions will be done.
