Jerry Heralall was on Monday sentenced to 20 years behind bars for fatally beating his drinking buddy, Celon Outar.

Heralall, 30, of New Amsterdam, Berbice was sentenced by Justice Navindra Singh at the Berbice High Court. Although indicted for murder, Heralall had opted to plead guilty to the lesser count of manslaughter.

He had admitted that between January 25-27, 2020 at Republic Road, New Amsterdam, Berbice, he unlawfully killed Outar, 28.

    Sentenced: Jerry Heralall

On Monday, while delivering sentencing remarks, Justice Singh said that Heralall lacked genuine remorse for his actions.

He then sentenced Heralall to 20 years imprisonment with time spent on remand to be deducted from his sentence.

According to reports, on January 25, 2020, Heralall and Outer were imbibing at a New Amsterdam shop. The men had a misunderstanding after Heralall requested that Outar’s wife drink with them, but Outar objected.

Heralall armed himself with a piece of wood and dealt Outar a lash to his head and about his body. He then allegedly dragged Outar to the nearby canal where he threw him in and then returned to the bar and continued imbibing with the man’s wife and others.

Two days later, Outar’s body was found south of the Region Six Democratic Council’s Complex partially submerged in the waterway.
