BUDGET 2023: $200M for new day and night care centres & senior citizens’ home

Finance Minister Dr. Ashni Singh on Monday announced that $200 million will be spent to construct new day and night care centres and a new home for senior citizens, as part of a wider $40.4 billion allocation for the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security.

The Finance Minister, while presenting the 2023 National Budget, emphasised that the government continues to mull measures to support vulnerable members of society including women, children and the elderly.

As such, $100 million is budgeted for the construction of day and night care centres to benefit women and men in need of child-care services while they work.

He also announced that another $100 million will be spent to start construction of a new home for senior citizens.

To support both sets of facilities, dozens of people are receiving training at government-funded programmes.

Meanwhile, government also plans to spend another $114.9 million to help people affected by violence get legal aid services.
