BUDGET 2023: $500M to boost Amerindian land titling

Land titling for Indigenous people remains a focus of the government and Minister of Finance Dr. Ashni Singh on Monday said that $500 million has been allocated towards the Amerindian Land Titling Project.

Dr. Singh said that five additional demarcations were completed under this project and with the new allocation, he believes much-needed work will advance.

Land titling is the process of offering legal recognition to lands occupied by Guyana’s indigenous people. It has, however, been a longstanding issue that a previous People’s Progressive Party Civic (PPP/C) government sought to address.

Meanwhile, Dr. Singh, who presented the 2023 National Budget, said that government will also spend on improving hinterland roads and connecting hinterland communities to internet services.

Overall, the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs received an allocation of $4.7 billion.
