Investigating ranks in Region 6, Berbice squeezed a confession out of one of the suspects presently in Police custody for the murder of the Yakusari, Black Bush Polder couple Sarasuati Devi Budraj called ‘Sita” and Subnauth Budraj called “Bull Boy”.

Regional Commander Shivpersaud Bacchus confirmed that Police found stolen articles belonging to the couple at the home of a 22-year-old Yakusari South Black Bush Polder resident. The articles included jewelery with the names of the couple, phone cards and and an undisclosed amount of Guyana currency. Following his arrest, along with six others (male and female), the man confessed to committing the brutal act and implicated another person who is also in custody.

He told Police that the intention was to commit robbery but the victims recognised them; to derail Police investigations they killed the couple and set the place on fire by opening a gas bottle in the kitchen and lighting papers on fire. The fumes emanating from the burning paper caused the gas bottle to explode, setting the place ablaze with the already dead Budraj couple lying on the floor.

Bacchus said investigations are still ongoing but charges will be laid shortly.

Regional Commander Shivpersaud Bacchus told reporters at the scene of the crime that the Police received a report around 04:00-04:30 Tuesday morning of an alleged fire.

Neighbours said they heard a loud explosion and subsequently saw fire coming from the bottom flat of the two storey concrete house and business place of the couple. The fire service was contacted and arrived sometime after.

According to Bacchus, the gate to enter the yard had to be removed for entry into the bottom flat where the couple dwelled. He said the residents entered and “upon pushing the door, one of the victim’s was lying face down and they didn’t enter further.” The area was subsequently secured when Police arrived.

He said when the Police entered the property they indeed saw the body of a male lying face-down with injuries and a further entry into the bottom they the woman also lying face-down with “an object in the left side of her neck” in the dining area.

The Commander disclosed that the body of the man had multiple injuries. The left arm of the woman was also burnt.

News Room was also informed that the building was ransacked and blood stains were found in the market area close to the Budrajs.
