Two cops, mason remanded after busted at roadblock with drugs, ammo

Police Constables Julius Cambridge, 22, and Albert Beresford, 29, were remanded to prison on Wednesday along with 32-year-old Sheldon Benjamin for the possession of narcotics for the purpose of trafficking and possession of ammunition without a license.

The trio were jointly charged when they appeared at the Cove and John Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Fabayo Azore. They all pleaded not guilty to the charges and were remanded to prison until February 28, 2023.

The policemen and Benjamin were arrested in the wee hours of Monday after they were found with drugs and ammunition at a roadblock on the Cove and John Public Road, East Coast Demerara.

Benjamin was the driver of the car.

Police had reported that the men were observed acting suspiciously, and as such, a search was conducted.

During the search, 170 grammes of cocaine and 9, 430 grammes of marijuana were discovered.

A further search was carried out in the car, and two .38, two .40 and (11) eleven 9mm rounds of ammunition were found.

Albert Beresford was stationed at the Clonbrook Police Outpost while Julius Cambridge was stationed at the Cane Grove Police Station.
