Child dies from burn injuries two days after fire destroys house

Eight-year-old Jermaine Johnson died on Sunday from injuries he sustained in a fire that destroyed his Cummings Lodge, Georgetown house on Friday last.
The Guyana Fire Service (GFS) on Sunday extended sincere condolences to the family. Seventy-five-year-old Lynette Gray, who was also severely injured during the fire, remains in a critical condition, the Fire Service said.
According to the GFS, it received a call at approximately 2:43 hrs on Friday about the fire and immediately deployed water tenders from the Campbellville, Alberttown, and Central fire stations to Lot 873 South Cummings Lodge.
Upon arrival, firefighters observed a two-storey wooden and concrete house engulfed in smoke and flames.
Gray is the owner of the house; five others lived there.
Despite the efforts of the firefighters, the house was completely destroyed. The purported cause of the fire is an electrical fan that overheated and ignited nearby combustible materials, the Fire Service said.
