Businessman remanded for attempted murder of ex-wife

Fifty-five-year-old Khemadatt Persaud known as ‘Krishna’ of Vryheid, West Bank Berbice, was on Wednesday charged with the offence of attempted murder and was remanded to prison.

It is alleged that on January 29, 2023, Persaud attempted to commit murder on his ex-wife, Deoranie ‘Marcia’ Badal, 36.

He appeared at the No.51 Magistrate’s Court before Magistrate Rabindranauth Singh and was not required to plead to the indictable charge.

Police Prosecutor, Lance Corporal Whitney Yearwood told the court that the victim remains in a critical condition at the Liliendaal Hospital after she tested positive for COVID-19 following the chopping incident.

Persaud was remanded to prison until February 16, 2023.

Surveillance footage seen by the News Room revealed that the victim driving ito the Jamrock Wash Bay at Port Mourant, Corentyne, Berbice.

In the video, the accused exited a car that pulled up behind the victim’s vehicle armed with a cutlass.

As the victim exited her vehicle, the accused chopped her several times as she collapsed on the ground; her vehicle drove into the car in front of her.

The accused continued to chop the woman as she laid helpless on the roadway and other people looked on.

The businessman sped away in his car; the woman was picked up by a Police Constable at the scene and rushed to the hospital.

The News Room understands that the couple separated some three months ago.
