The driver being pursued by officers of the Customs Anti-Narcotic Unit (CANU) on Wednesday morning was nabbed with several bundles of cannabis, amounting to 51.2 pounds.

According to information provided by CANU, the suspect was travelling in a white motor car (#PRR 6703). Officers were pursuing him based on intelligence received.

The suspect was apprehended in the vicinity of Buxton, East Coast Demerara (ECD) and the drugs were found in the vehicle’s trunk.

A truck was set on fire during the protest at Buxton

CANU said some warning shots were fired in the course of the operation to stop the fleeing vehicle which ended up in a nearby trench. CANU Head James Singh, however, told the News Room that no one was hurt during the operation and the suspect was taken into custody.

Subsequently, a protest erupted at Buxton. A large number of persons gathered on the roadway and burnt debris and later, a truck; the driver of the truck was allegedly beaten.

The public road also became impassable.

The Ministry of Home Affairs is calling on persons engaged in the blocking of roadways and other illegal activities to desist from this practice.
