Businessman beaten, car set on fire at Hopetown after collision with two persons
Chaos erupted at Hopetown, West Coast Berbice (WCB), on Sunday evening after a businessman, who was driving his RX8 vehicle, collided with two persons riding on an electric scooter.
The News Room understands that a businessman was driving behind the scooter on the public road when the incident occurred.
After the man struck down the duo on the electric scooter, residents who were nearby rushed out and beat the driver before torching his vehicle on the public road. This halted the free flow of traffic.
The persons who were on the scooter were taken to the Fort Wellington Hospital for treatment. The driver is also hospitalised with critical injuries following the abuse from the Hopetown residents.
Additionally, ranks from the Guyana Police Force and the Guyana Fire Service were dispatched to the scene to restore order and extinguish the blaze.
Too much knee-jerk reaction happening resulting in vigilantism. To torch the man’s vehicle after beating him up is way over the top and all the ‘perps’ involved have to be brought to book. However the story lacks details but we have to reserve judgment as to the cause of the accident.
Burning the vehicle, beating the driver and causing interruptions in the society is no solution to the prevention of motor vehicular accidents in any part of society.
In my view this pattern of activity has become a ‘normal ‘pattern in certain places and one which is associated with another agenda ,just reflect on the one recently where a lorry was totally incinerated.
This one and similar activities will never ever be the way forward in any society and those responsible for the propagation of such practices must be exposed and brought to justice .
