Another 15 to 20 recreational parks will be created across the country as the government hopes to improve people’s standard of living, President Dr. Irfaan Ali said recently

Two recreational parks are currently under construction in Region Six (East Berbice- Corentyne). The first is at Skeldon and the other is at New Amsterdam. Both of these projects are initiatives of the First Lady Mrs. Arya Ali.

And last week, President Ali visited these sites to see firsthand what work was being done. After his visit to the New Amsterdam facility, he promised that more projects like these will be rolled out.

“We’re doing one at Skeldon, we’re doing one here (New Amsterdam) for now and across the country we are doing maybe 15 to 20 in all of the regions,” the President said.

He added, “What we want in all the urban centres is to have facilities like these…(because) you are seeing the effect on the investments for families (and) for children.”

At Skeldon and New Amsterdam, there are numerous facilities for various age groups. The President also pointed out that special rails will be installed to help persons with disabilities access the spaces.

Beyond constructing attractive facilities, the President explained that the intention is to make urban reserves “functional”. That is, spaces with overgrown grass will be transformed into clean, green spaces that people will enjoy.

The President also said that each park will benefit from adequate security.
