Rooplall Rukhdeo, a 49-year-old fisherman of Peter Street Annandale, East Coast Demerara (ECD), died on Sunday night after he reportedly fell from a wooden stand and into the path of a car on the Annandale Access Road.

Police Headquarters reported that a 22-year-old Annandale resident was driving motorcar PLL 4752 north along the western side of the road at about 19:00hrs on Sunday.

At that time, the driver said he saw a group of persons sitting on a wooden stand at the side of the road imbibing alcohol. He alleged that as he was passing the group, one of the individuals who was sitting on the stand, fell onto the roadway and into the path of the car.

As a result, the left-side front wheel ran over Rukhdeo. He was picked up in an unconscious condition and taken to the Georgetown Public Hospital in a Police Force pick-up where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy conducted on Monday morning at the hospital’s mortuary revealed that the man died due to multiple crush injuries to the head.

Meanwhile, the Police said a breathalyser test was conducted on the driver and he was found with .004 per cent micrograms of alcohol in his system, which is below the blood alcohol limit.

The driver has been arrested and is assisting with the investigation.
