Girl, 17, dies in accident; sister injured
The elder of two sisters who were involved in an accident at Coldingen, East Coast Demerara (ECD), on Friday has died.
The Guyana Police Force (GPF) reported that Bibi Sophia Mohammed, 17, of Non-Pariel Railway Embankment, ECD, died after the electric bike she and her 16-year-old sister were riding collided with a truck.
Police Headquarters said the younger sister was steering the bike while Mohamed was the pillion rider.
It is alleged that the truck, GRR 3130, owned by R and B Investment and driven by Rickford Beckles, a 67-year-old from Annandale, drove over the girls at around 17:30hrs.
Police said the driver was proceeding north along the western side of Coldigen Public Road when he approached the main road, stopped and observed the traffic before going onto the access road.
However, the driver said when he proceeded, he felt his lorry ‘bump up’ and when he came out, he saw two girls lying on the road next to an electric cycle.
The girls were picked up by public spirited persons and escorted to Georgetown Public Hospital, where Bibi was pronounced dead.
The sister remains hospitalised and the driver is in custody, assisting with the ongoing investigation.
