Good Hope man chopped to death, suspect arrested

A fight between two men at Good Hope, East Coast Demerara led to the chopping to death of 38-year-old Surajpaul Etwaroo, a construction worker of the same community.

The incident occurred at about 17:30hrs Friday and according to the Police, the murder suspect, who is from Stanleytown, West Bank Demerara, was later arrested by and is presently in custody assisting with the investigation.

According to Police Headquarters, an eyewitness said she saw both Etwaroo and the suspect on separate bicycles but Etwaroo was armed with a baton and cutlass, heading in the suspect’s direction.

She also said another identifiable man was seen in the vicinity where the alleged murder occurred.

Shortly after, she saw them return, heading north. This time, Etwaroo was holding a cutlass, and the identifiable man had a baton.

Simultaneously, the suspect came out from a cross street north of the road, and both parties then rode in each other’s direction for a confrontation. Etwaroo and the suspect then got off their bicycles while the identifiable male ran into the yard of the eyewitness.

It is alleged that Etwaroo began chopping at the suspect with the cutlass while the suspect pulled a knife from his waist and retaliated. The suspect also picked up the baton and hit Etwaroo, causing him to drop his cutlass.

It is further alleged that the suspect then picked up the cutlass and chopped Etwaroo multiple times, including to the abdomen.

The suspect also used his knife and stabbed Etwaroo several times about his body as he lay motionless on the ground with his intestine protruding.

The suspect then got on his bicycle, rode north, and escaped.The eyewitness raised an alarm, and several persons gathered. Etwaroo was then transported by his brother to the Georgetown Public Hosptial, where he succumbed to his injuries while receiving medical attention.
