Harbour Bridge to close for 24 hours; water taxis to fill the void

In a notice on Wednesday, the Demerara Harbour Bridge Corporation informed that the bridge will close for a 24-hour period to facilitate emergency repair works to span eight.

The closure will take effect from Sunday at 3am to Monday at 3am.

According to the notice, these works have become critical after the Panama-registered oil tanker, MV Tradewind Passion, crashed into the bridge in October last year and rendered it inoperable for several days.

Citizens are assured that this inconvenience is absolutely necessary to ensure the structural integrity of the bridge and for the safety of everyone crossing.

But consequent to this closure, the Demerara Water Taxis Service will remain operational for the full 24-hour period to facilitate the transport of commuters.

Commuters are assured of an uninterrupted water taxi service from Vreed-en-Hoop to Stabroek during this period.

Please be advised that the fare for this service remains at $100. Commuters are reminded to securely wear life vests when traveling on the water.

EDITOR’S NOTE: This story initially stated that the Harbour Bridge will be closed on Saturday and Sunday, however, the authorities later changed the time and date. The story has since been amended accordingly.
