Cop dies following ‘Mash Day’ accident, colleague recovering

Forty-year-old Police Corporal, Alden Reynolds succumbed to the injuries on Friday following an accident that occurred Thursday on the Heathburn public road, East Bank Berbice.

Reynolds of Sanvoort Village, West Canje, Berbice and his colleague, 37-year-old Javon Thomas, were standing next to a parked vehicle on the road when a drunk driver lost control of his car and crashed into them.

Both men were picked up in an unconscious state and rushed to the New Amsterdam Hospital; they were subsequently transferred to the Georgetown Public Hospital and efforts were being made to move them to a private hospital where Reynolds died on Friday.

The News Room understands that Reynolds suffered broken limbs and other injuries; he also had other health complications.

Reynolds was stationed at the Whim Police Station but also worked at all the stations throughout Region Six as a CID rank.

Thomas, a Police Sergeant of Fort Ordinance Housing Scheme, sustained injuries to his legs and is said to be recovering.

The News Room had reported that Troy Henry, 50, a hire car driver, lost control of his speeding car (HD 2116) and crashed into a parked vehicle (PAC 4187) at the side of the road; the two cops were standing next to the parked vehicle when Henry also crashed into them.

Henry was arrested at the scene and a breathalyzer test found that he was above the legal limit of alcohol (.48 and .51).

Regional Commander Shivpersaud Bacchus and his team are expected to visit the relatives of Reynolds on Saturday.

    How sad. So quickly and so suddenly was the cal. He has gone so soon. My sympathy goes out to his grieving relatives. May his soul rest in peace. I do hope that justice be served and that his colleague feels better soon.
