Two schools in Region Six (East Berbice-Corentyne), the Schepmoed Primary School and the Lighttown Primary/ Nursery School, are now powered by solar energy following interventions from the Guyana Energy Agency (GEA).

According to a release from the GEA, solar systems were installed in both schools in January. The Agency said these projects are in keeping with the government’s sustainable energy interventions for communities and public buildings.

A 3.375 kilowatt peak (kWp) Solar Photovoltaic (PV) system, along with a 19.2 kilowatt hour (kWh) Valve-Regulated Lead-Acid (VRLA) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) was installed at the Lighttown Primary/Nursery School.

The Lighttown Primary School is located approximately 18 kilometres (KM) from New Amsterdam on the east bank of the Berbice river.

“This initiative will provide a renewable, stable, and reliable electricity supply to the school and the school’s kitchen for its daily activities benefitting the students and teachers,” the GEA said.

It added, “The teachers present at the time of the solar PV system’s installation expressed their gratitude for the initiative stating that it will allow them to better utilise the school’s services and provide better learning opportunities for the students.”

GEA’s Engineer provided training to five personnel (one male and four females) at the facility on the operation and maintenance of the system.

Meanwhile, a six kWp Solar PV system, along with a 28.8kWh Valve-Regulated Lead-Acid (VRLA) Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) was installed at the Schepmoed Primary School. The teacher’s quarter was also connected to the electricity supply from the solar system.

Schepmoed Primary School is located approximately 36 km from New Amsterdam on the east bank of the Berbice river.

This initiative will provide a renewable, stable, and reliable electricity supply to school and the school’s kitchen for its daily activities, benefitting approximately 18 students and three teachers.
