A Kitty businessman, who was last year caught on camera brutally assaulting his 25-year-old daughter, has been found guilty of the crime.

Devanand Singh, the owner of Brands2Go, was on trial before Magistrate Rhondel Weever at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.

Last April, the businessman made his first appearance for the offences of inflicting grievous bodily harm and threatening language.

He was released on bail in the sum of $400,000 after pleading not guilty to the two charges.

The businessman’s brutal assault of his daughter was caught on CCTV cameras inside his store

Attorney Latchmie Rahamat represented the victim’s interest in the case; Singh was represented by Nigel Hughes and Associates. On Tuesday, Magistrate Weever found that the prosecution’s case against Singh was sufficient.

Singh’s sentencing was deferred until March 23 as the court awaits a probation report.

His attorneys had argued that a video recording should not be accepted as evidence because it was a secondhand recording that was provided by the victim and as such, was exposed to tampering.

However, the Magistrate rejected the argument and ruled that the video was the most honest independent evidence which shows Singh kicking and slapping his daughter countless times.

The woman currently has a lifetime protection order from the court against her father.

In 2022, the victim revealed that she was abused by her father for years.
