Motorcyclist, pillion rider die in Upper Corentyne accident

Two persons are now dead following an accident on the Number 79 Public Road, Corriverton, Berbice, on Tuesday night.

The accident, which occurred at approximately 22:25 hrs, resulted in the death of motorcyclist Devindra Sampal Lakhraj, 30, of 82 Rahaman Street, Corriverton, and pillion rider Ronny Persaud, 24, of 53 Race Course, Springlands, Corriverton, Berbice.

Based on the police report, the accident involved motorcar HC 7188, driven by a Number 77 Housing Scheme resident and Lakhraj, who was riding his motorcycle.

The News Room understands that HC 7188 was heading south on the eastern lane with passenger Mary Devair, 39, of Lot 1 Grant 1805 Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, Berbice, in the front passenger seat.

Lakhraj was proceeding north along the western side, reportedly at a fast rate when he crashed into the front portion of the car.

Both Lakhraj and pillion rider Persaud were flung from the motorcycle, causing both men to receive multiple injuries.

The driver of the car, along with passenger Devair, also received injuries and were all taken to the Skeldon Hospital where Lakhraj and Persaud were pronounced dead.

Devair was transferred to the New Amsterdam Public Hospital and admitted to the Accident and Emergency Unit. She is said to be suffering from head injuries.

The driver of the motor car is in custody. According to the police, the motorcyclist and pillion rider were not wearing helmets at the time of the accident.

Police are investigating.
