A couple was displaced on Sunday after a fire of unknown origin destroyed their 2nd Ave. Bartica, Region Seven home.

Reports are that the fire started at about 15:36 hrs.

The property is owned by 57-year-old Bhagwanttie Rohit-Joseph. At the time, it was occupied by Bheesham Rohit, 31 and his 25-year-old wife, Camacy Hendricks.

In a statement on Monday, the Guyana Fire Service (GFS) said two fire tenders from the Bartica fire station were dispatched to the scene.

Upon their arrival, the one-story wooden and concrete building was engulfed in flames.

As a result, the building and its contents were destroyed. A motorcycle and boat engine belonging to Rohit was also destroyed.

And due to the radiated heat, the GFS said a quantity of window panes, PVC guttering and roof facing two from two neighbouring houses suffered damage.

“Two jets working from water bowser #11 in relay with water tender #98 were used to extinguish the fire,” the GFS noted.

An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the fire.
