Police Sergeant critical after shot by cousin during fight

A Police Sergeant attached to the Tactical Services Unit (TSU) is in a critical condition after he was allegedly shot by his 27-year-old cousin while trying to part a fight on Sunday night in Linden, Region 10.

Injured is Jermain Semple of Hope Town, West Coast Berbice.

He was shot twice including to his head, during the incident which took place at about 21:00 hrs at Crown and Anchor Grill and Bar, Amelia’s Ward, Linden.

The suspect, who has been identified as Fawaz McRae, a building contractor of Central Amelia’s Ward, is currently in police custody. He is a licensed firearm holder.

The News Room understands that McRae and Semple are cousins.

Reports indicate that on Sunday night, Semple, his brother and McRae were imbibing at the bar when a fight started between the Police Sergeant and his brother.

McRae tried to part them but a fight started between him and the suspect.

As a result, the suspect allegedly whipped out his licensed firearm and discharged two rounds in the victim’s direction.

Semple was rushed to the Linden Hospital Complex. His condition is listed as critical.

McRae was also taken to the said hospital for injuries to his hand and ears which he sustained during the fight. His hands were swabbed for gun powder residue.

Police recovered two rounds at the scene.
