A 23-year-old teacher will be facing jail time if she does not repay almost $500,000 to her ex-lover which she has since admitted to sealing.
Nickacia Sobers of Soesdyke/Linden Highway was on Wednesday remanded to prison by Chief Magistrate Ann McLennan at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court.
Sobers admitted that on December 20, 2022, at Avenue of the Republic, Georgetown, she stole $467,000 in cash from Richard Brathwaite.
The State Prosecutor told the court that Sobers and Brathwaite were in an intimate relationship, which ended on the day in question.
Brathwaite operates a shoe stall in the vicinity of Avenue of the Republic and on the day of the incident, he reportedly placed the money in his car, which was parked in front of the stall.
Shortly after, Sobers visited the stall and subsequently went inside the car where she spent some time alone.
After dropping Sobers home, Brathwaite later checked for his money when he discovered it was missing; he reported the matter to the Police and Sobers was arrested.
In court, Sobers admitted that she had outstanding debts and stole the money to pay them off.
However, Sobers said that she made attempts to repay the money but Brathwaite refused to collect the money in parts.
Brathwaite, who was present in court, told the Chief Magistrate that although Sobers had promised to repay him, all calls to her cellphones proved futile when he tried to contact her.
Taking the aforementioned into consideration, the Chief Magistrate remanded Sobers to prison and granted her until Friday to repay Brathwaite.
If she cannot pay the money, Sobers will be sentenced for the crime.
It is most unfortunate that ,Ms. Sobers has found herself in such a plight. I trust that she would be able to make full restitution if not in part by Friday. She is qualified and educated and should not let dishonesty tarnish her character.
